Overview

Nutritional deficiencies are states in which the body receives insufficient amounts of one or more nutrients—macronutrients such as protein and energy, or micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals—to meet physiological needs. They arise from inadequate dietary intake or diversity, impaired digestion or absorption, increased metabolic demand, or conditions that alter nutrient handling, including bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery. Manifestations depend on the nutrient lacking and the population affected, ranging from vitamin D and B12 deficiencies to broader protein-energy malnutrition, and may present as growth faltering, anemia, immune compromise, neurologic disturbance, or impaired wound healing. Vulnerable groups include pregnant women, infants and children, older adults, and individuals with restrictive diets or malabsorptive conditions. Identification combines dietary assessment, anthropometry, body-composition analysis, and biochemical testing, while correction relies on dietary modification, supplementation, fortification, and, where indicated, functional foods and nutraceuticals. Research relevant to this area examines nutritional deficiencies following surgery for morbid obesity, vitamin D status in institutionalized children, feeding difficulties and gastrointestinal disease in children with autism spectrum disorder, body composition and nutritional status across age groups, and assessment of nutritional status in maternal and child populations. This peer-reviewed nutrition literature reflects the etiology, at-risk populations, and clinical evaluation of nutritional deficiency within the broader study of nutrition and Obesity Management.
