Overview

Eating disorders are mental health conditions defined by persistent disturbances in eating behaviour and related thoughts and emotions, often accompanied by preoccupation with food, body weight, or shape, and producing significant physical and psychological harm. Recognised forms include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, along with related presentations such as night eating syndrome and the proposed pattern of orthorexia nervosa, characterised by an unhealthy fixation on eating only foods perceived as pure or healthy. These disorders arise from an interplay of psychological, biological, and social factors, and they frequently co-occur with depression, anxiety, and other psychopathology. Research relevant to eating disorders examines their relationship with dysfunctional attitudes and co-occurring depressive and aggressive symptoms in young people, the assessment of sleep and psychopathology in night eating syndrome, the quality-of-life impact of orthorexia, and the influence of social and media pressures on attitudes toward food and health. Because disordered eating spans both undernutrition and overconsumption, it intersects with Obesity Management and with conditions that can mimic psychiatric presentations. Their consequences can be severe and, in some cases, life-threatening, making early recognition and intervention important. Key themes include the psychological underpinnings of disordered eating, its physical complications, its links to body image and sociocultural factors, and the need for integrated mental and physical health care, which together support identification, understanding, and treatment.
