Overview

Diabetes and Endocrinology Obesity describes the area of clinical medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and management of disorders of body weight, metabolism and the endocrine (hormonal) system, with particular attention to the close links between obesity, diabetes and hormonal regulation. The field addresses conditions including obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, as well as disorders of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands and problems of reproduction and fertility, recognising that excess body fat and disturbed metabolism interact with hormonal signalling in ways that drive disease. Because obesity is a major risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes and contributes to many endocrine and cardiovascular complications, its management is central to this specialty and combines lifestyle interventions such as diet and physical activity with behavioural support, medications and, in selected cases, surgical treatment. Effective care also depends on screening and early identification so that risk can be reduced before complications develop. Obesity Management, as an OpenAccessPub journal, covers the prevention and treatment of obesity and its metabolic and endocrine consequences, including work on improving the screening and management of obesity in clinical settings. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to obesity, diabetes and endocrine health.
