Overview
Fatty acids are carboxylic acids with long hydrocarbon chains that serve as the basic building blocks of fats and oils and play essential roles in energy storage, cell membrane structure, and biological signaling. They occur as saturated or unsaturated forms, and several, including the omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, are dietary essentials that the human body cannot synthesize on its own. In chemistry and nutrition, fatty acids are studied for their physicochemical properties, biological functions, and wide range of natural and industrial applications. Research characterizes the fatty acid composition of plant and seed sources, such as barberry seed, and the lipid effects of materials like wheat germ oil, while also examining the health roles of omega-3 fatty acids. The journal publishes work on the supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and their effects on inflammation in adipose tissue and on serum triglyceride levels, as well as the use of high-energy liquid nutrition and omega-3 fatty acids in treating anorexia nervosa, and the safety of seafood and omega-3 intake during pregnancy and lactation. Related studies address fatty acids in human milk composition, the use of residual seed oils for biodiesel through transesterification, industrial applications of algae as lipid sources, and dietary fish oil in relation to tumor growth, illustrating the broad scientific and applied significance of fatty acids.
