Overview

Column chromatography is a laboratory technique used to separate and purify the components of a mixture based on their differing interactions with a stationary phase and a mobile phase. A column is packed with a solid stationary material, and the mixture is passed through it dissolved in a liquid or carried by a solvent; as the components travel down the column at different rates according to their physical and chemical properties, they separate into distinct bands and can be collected individually. It is a fundamental and widely used method in organic, analytical, and pharmaceutical chemistry for isolating compounds and removing impurities. Research in this subject area applies chromatographic separation and purification to chemical synthesis and analysis. Studies have used these methods in the synthesis and purification of glycosyl and nucleoside compounds, the isolation and characterization of enzymes such as xanthine oxidase and peroxidase, and the separation of bioactive compounds from natural sources. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to column chromatography and its role in the separation, purification, and analysis of chemical compounds in the broader study of New Developments in Chemistry.
