Overview

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas composed of one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms, occurring naturally in Earth's atmosphere and central to the global carbon cycle. It is generated by respiration, decomposition, volcanic activity, and the combustion of carbon-containing fuels, and it is absorbed by plants and other photosynthetic organisms that convert it into biomass. As a greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide absorbs and re-emits infrared radiation, and rising atmospheric concentrations driven largely by fossil-fuel use are a principal factor in contemporary climate change. Carbon dioxide also dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, a process linked to ocean and freshwater acidification. Because of its chemical reactivity and abundance, carbon dioxide is studied across chemistry, environmental science, and engineering as both a pollutant to be managed and a feedstock to be valorized. Research published in this journal touches on related themes, including the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide by terrestrial and aquatic plants in the context of net-zero emissions, biogas production from organic substrates, the role of algae and biotechnology in mitigating climate change, and enhanced oil recovery chemistry. Key aspects of the field include carbon capture, sequestration, and utilization, biological fixation, and the relationship between emissions and global warming.
