Overview

Calcium-activated potassium channels are a class of ion channels that play a significant role in regulating the excitability of cells in various tissues, including neurons, smooth muscle cells, and cardiomyocytes. These channels are activated by an increase in intracellular calcium levels, allowing for the efflux of potassium ions from the cell. Over the years, research on calcium-activated potassium channels has uncovered their involvement in several physiological processes, including neurotransmitter release, action potential repolarization, and vasodilation. As such, they are considered a potential therapeutic target for a wide range of medical conditions, including epilepsy, hypertension, and ischemic brain injury.
