Overview

Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by organic groups such as alkyl or aryl substituents. Classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary depending on the number of substituents on the nitrogen atom, amines are among the most important classes of nitrogen-containing compounds in chemistry. They are basic, often reactive, and serve as building blocks and intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, polymers, and agrochemicals. Amines also occur widely in nature, including the biogenic amines that arise in biological systems and foods and play roles in physiology and toxicology. Within the broad scope of New Developments in Chemistry, research relevant to amines has examined the role of biogenic amines in nutrition toxicology, addressing their formation and significance in biological and food contexts. The synthesis, characterization, and applications of amines and related nitrogen compounds remain active areas of chemical research. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to amines and chemistry, offering researchers and students freely accessible scientific work across the field, spanning synthesis, analysis, and the properties of organic compounds.
