Overview

Stroke is an acute neurological injury caused by a sudden interruption of blood supply to part of the brain, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients and producing rapid loss of neurological function. It is a major cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. The two principal types are ischemic stroke, in which a blood vessel supplying the brain is blocked, often by a clot or by arterial disease such as carotid dissection, and hemorrhagic stroke, in which a vessel ruptures and bleeds into or around the brain. Because brain tissue is highly sensitive to loss of perfusion, timely recognition, diagnosis, and treatment are critical, and outcomes depend heavily on how quickly care is delivered. Research published in this journal spans the clinical and translational dimensions of stroke, including in-hospital mortality, complications, and quality-of-care indicators among stroke inpatients, diagnostic protocols using computed tomography angiography for acute ischemic stroke, and endothelial function across stroke subtypes. Further contributions address lacunar infarction and its predictors, intracerebral hemorrhage and the limitations of age criteria in surgical trials, carotid artery dissection, genetic associations with vascular disease, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke admissions, and recovery-oriented approaches such as stem-cell and tissue-engineering models. Together these themes reflect a focus on prevention, acute management, subtype characterization, and rehabilitation.
