Overview

Neurology treatment encompasses the medical, interventional, surgical, and rehabilitative strategies used to manage disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These disorders are highly diverse, ranging from common conditions such as headaches and migraines to cerebrovascular disease like ischemic stroke, demyelinating conditions such as multiple sclerosis, and other acute and chronic neurological illnesses. Treatment selection depends on accurate diagnosis, often supported by imaging modalities such as computed tomography angiography used in evaluating acute stroke, and on understanding disease severity and prognosis, as illustrated by studies of disability and prognostic factors in conditions like multiple sclerosis and lacunar infarction. Therapeutic approaches span pharmacological management, acute interventions for time-critical conditions, surgical procedures where indicated, and rehabilitation aimed at restoring function and quality of life. The evidence underpinning neurological therapy depends on rigorous clinical research methodology, including the appropriate use of blinding and controlled trial design to distinguish genuine treatment effects from bias. Complementary and non-pharmacological approaches, including the therapeutic use of music, are also explored within neurological care. Drawing on neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, and rehabilitation medicine, the field integrates diagnosis, intervention, and recovery. Its sub-areas include stroke and vascular neurology, headache medicine, neuroimmunology, and neurorehabilitation, collectively working to improve outcomes and quality of life for people with neurological disease.
