Overview

Neurological disorders are diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular system that disrupt the structure or function of the nervous system. They comprise a broad spectrum, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, stroke and cerebrovascular disease, dementias, infections, traumatic injury, and the neurological complications of systemic illness. Their manifestations range from sensory disturbances and pain to weakness, paralysis, movement abnormalities, seizures, and cognitive or behavioral change, reflecting the function of the affected structures. Underlying mechanisms include genetic susceptibility, neurodegeneration, vascular compromise, inflammation and autoimmunity, infection, and metabolic disturbance, and diagnosis integrates clinical examination, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and laboratory and genetic testing. Research in this area examines movement abnormalities in Parkinson's disease, functional connectivity in dementia, genetic polymorphisms in epilepsy, neurological manifestations of infections such as dengue, the methodology and history of therapeutic research in neurological disease, and the contribution of nutritional and metabolic factors to neurological outcomes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the mechanisms, diagnosis, and management of neurological disorders across the central and peripheral nervous systems.
