Overview

Neurological physical therapy, or neuro physical therapy, is a specialized branch of physical therapy that treats individuals whose movement, balance, and coordination have been affected by diseases, disorders, or injuries of the nervous system. Conditions commonly addressed include stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and peripheral nerve disorders, among others. The aim of neuro physical therapy is to restore or improve motor function and independence by retraining movement patterns, strengthening muscles, improving balance and gait, and reducing the secondary complications that can follow neurological damage. Therapists draw on principles of neuroplasticity, the nervous system's capacity to reorganize and adapt, designing individualized programs of exercise, functional task practice, and assistive strategies that help patients relearn or compensate for lost abilities. Treatment is typically progressive and goal-oriented, with ongoing assessment used to adapt the plan as a patient recovers or as a chronic condition evolves. As a topic within Neurological Research and Therapy, neuro physical therapy connects clinical rehabilitation practice to the wider study of nervous-system function, recovery, and the development of effective therapeutic approaches for people living with neurological conditions.
