Overview

Nervous system diseases are disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, and the network of nerves throughout the body. They can disrupt movement, sensation, cognition, and the regulation of basic bodily functions, and they arise from causes including genetic mutations, infection, inflammation, degeneration, injury, and tumours. Because the nervous system coordinates so much of human function, these diseases range widely in their presentation and severity and are a major focus of clinical and research neurology. Within the journal's scope on Neurological Research and Therapy, work has addressed a range of nervous system conditions, including Tay-Sachs disease, an inherited neurodegenerative disorder, examined from its molecular characterisation to the prospects for genetic medicine; post-COVID-19 acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system; changes in the statistics of malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system in a region of Poland; and neuroscience theories of the physiopathology of autism spectrum disorder. Such studies span the genetic, inflammatory, oncological, and developmental dimensions of nervous system disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to nervous system diseases, supporting neurologists, neuroscientists, and students interested in the causes, mechanisms, and treatment of disorders of the brain and nerves.
