Overview

Cranial nerve disorders are conditions that affect one or more of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves, which emerge directly from the brain and brainstem and control many essential functions of the head and neck. These nerves govern eye movement, facial sensation and expression, smell, taste, hearing and balance, swallowing, and speech, so damage to them can produce a wide range of symptoms depending on which nerve is involved. Common manifestations include double vision, facial weakness or numbness, loss of smell or taste, hearing loss, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, and pain syndromes such as trigeminal neuralgia. Cranial nerve disorders can arise from many causes, including trauma, infection, inflammation, tumours that compress or invade a nerve, vascular problems, diabetes, and degenerative or autoimmune disease. Diagnosis relies on careful neurological examination to localise the affected nerve, supported by imaging and other investigations to identify the underlying cause. Management depends on the origin of the problem and may involve treating the underlying disease, medication, surgery, or rehabilitation. Because these disorders sit at the intersection of neurology, neurosurgery, and ophthalmology, they are a recurring focus of clinical neuroscience.
