Overview

Child neurology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, management, and study of disorders of the developing nervous system in infants, children, and adolescents. It addresses conditions of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles as they arise during a period of rapid maturation, so that the same insult can produce different consequences depending on the developmental stage at which it occurs. The scope includes epilepsy and seizure disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and intellectual disability, cerebral palsy and other motor disorders, neurogenetic and metabolic diseases, neuromuscular disorders, headache, and acquired problems such as infection, trauma, and pediatric stroke. Management frequently integrates dietary, behavioral, and pharmacological approaches; for example, dietary interventions have been examined as adjuncts in autism spectrum disorder. Diagnosis draws on developmental and neurological examination, electroencephalography, neuroimaging, and genetic and metabolic testing, interpreted against expected milestones. Because early intervention can alter long-term outcomes, child neurology emphasizes timely recognition, prognostication, and coordinated care involving families, rehabilitation, and education. Research in the field clarifies mechanisms of normal and abnormal brain development and informs therapies tailored to the maturing nervous system.
