Overview

Brain neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the structure, function, and disorders of the brain and the wider nervous system, addressing how disease affects cognition, movement, sensation, and behavior. It integrates clinical assessment, imaging, and therapy to diagnose and manage conditions of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Cerebrovascular disease is a major focus, including the prevalence and early prediction of lacunar infarction and the evaluation of stroke through computed tomography angiography to guide acute care. The discipline also encompasses outcomes after severe events, such as cerebral injury and necrosis following cardiorespiratory arrest, and chronic neurological disease, illustrated by the assessment of disability and prognostic factors in multiple sclerosis. Epilepsy features as a common disorder, examined through knowledge and attitudes that shape community management. Therapeutic and rehabilitative approaches extend to non-pharmacological interventions, including the role of music in neurological care, while methodological concerns such as the use of blinding in neurological clinical research reflect attention to rigorous evidence. Diagnosis combines neurological examination, neuroimaging, and clinical history to localize and characterize disease. Brain neurology thus links the biology and pathology of the nervous system to the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of neurological disorders, spanning acute cerebrovascular events, chronic conditions, and the rehabilitation strategies that support recovery.
