Overview
Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health disorders worldwide and frequently occur together. Anxiety is characterised by excessive worry, fear, and physical arousal, while depression involves persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, and disturbances of sleep, energy, appetite, and concentration; both can substantially impair daily functioning and quality of life. They arise from an interplay of genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and environmental factors, and their neurological underpinnings, including neurotransmitter systems, stress pathways, and brain circuitry, are an active focus of research and therapy. Treatments range from psychotherapy and pharmacological approaches to emerging neuromodulation techniques. Within this journal's scope on Neurological Research and Therapy, related work includes a study of anxiety, depression, personality, and family interaction among nursing students and their psychological well-being and suicidal ideation, and research on photobiomodulation in relation to depression, anxiety, and cognition, which explores a light-based neuromodulatory approach to these conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to anxiety and depression and the neurological mechanisms and therapeutic strategies relevant to mood and anxiety disorders.
