Overview
The amygdala is a small, almond-shaped cluster of neurons located deep within the temporal lobe of each cerebral hemisphere, forming part of the limbic system. It is central to processing emotionally salient information, particularly the detection of threat and the generation of fear, anxiety, and related responses, and it contributes to the encoding and consolidation of emotional memory through its connections with the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and hypothalamic and brainstem circuits that drive autonomic and endocrine reactions. Because of these roles, the amygdala is implicated in conditions ranging from anxiety and post-traumatic stress to mood disorders, aggression, and neurodegenerative disease. Research appearing in Neurological Research and Therapy touches on related circuitry, including the search for new deep-brain-stimulation targets in epilepsy treatment and the neurobiological basis of aggression and agitation in dementia, while companion journals in the publisher's portfolio examine fear and anxiety mechanisms, such as the role of cholecystokinin, and resting-state functional connectivity underlying emotional conflict control. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to amygdala structure, function, and its involvement in emotion, memory, and neurological and psychiatric disorders.
