Overview

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of dementia, characterized by the gradual deterioration of memory, thinking, and behavior as brain cells are damaged and lost. It is associated with the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits in the brain, including amyloid plaques and tau tangles, and predominantly affects older adults. Alzheimer's research spans molecular biology, neuroimaging, clinical care, and caregiver support. At the molecular level, studies examine circular RNAs and other regulatory molecules implicated in the disease, while imaging work explores techniques such as optical coherence tomography for early prediction and investigates structural changes like medial temporal lobe atrophy in relation to cortisol levels and depression in mild cognitive impairment. Therapeutic and management research considers approaches ranging from vagus nerve stimulation to assistive technology and cognitive-behavioral programs that promote adaptive skills in affected individuals, alongside dynamic network analyses of functional connectivity that probe temporal patterns in dementia. The journal also publishes work distinguishing the neurobiology of aggression and agitation in dementia, addressing knowledge gaps and misconceptions among caregivers, and exploring links between systemic factors such as nutrition, inflammatory mediators, and broader disease mechanisms. Together these studies reflect the multidisciplinary effort to understand, diagnose, and treat Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
