Overview

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections of any part of the urinary system, most commonly the bladder and urethra, but potentially extending to the ureters and kidneys, and are usually caused by bacteria that enter and multiply within the urinary tract. Typical symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, frequent and urgent urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pain in the lower abdomen or back. UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections, affecting women more often than men, and if left untreated they can ascend to the kidneys and cause more serious complications. Diagnosis relies on urinalysis and culture, and treatment generally involves antibiotics; however, rising antibiotic resistance, including the spread of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms, has made some infections increasingly difficult to manage. Within this nephrology-focused collection, the journal publishes research relevant to urinary tract infection and related areas, including the development of a multiplex real-time PCR assay for detecting ESBL genes in UTIs, case reports of antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infection, antibiotic resistance in elderly patients, bacteriological quality of groundwater, and the historical development and structure-activity relationships of sulfonamide antibacterial agents, reflecting both diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives on urinary tract infection.
