Overview

Kidney failure is the state in which the kidneys can no longer adequately filter waste products and regulate fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, leading to the accumulation of toxins and a cascade of systemic complications. It may develop acutely or progress chronically toward end-stage disease, and its consequences include hypertension, anaemia, mineral and bone disorder, and cardiovascular disease, reflecting the close physiological coupling between renal and cardiac function. Management ranges from treating reversible causes and slowing progression to renal replacement therapies such as dialysis and transplantation. Research collected here reflects these dimensions, including polycystic kidney disease, dipper and non-dipper hypertension patterns by chronic kidney disease stage, the evaluation of kidney function after transplantation, and the molecular correlates of anaemia in chronic kidney disease. Further contributions examine nephrotoxicity models in rats, heart failure and cardiorenal signalling pathways, the toxicity of iodinated radiographic contrast agents, thyroid abnormalities in chronic kidney disease, and refractory anaemia with hyperoxaluria. Together these peer-reviewed studies span the causes, systemic complications, and management of acute and chronic kidney failure, including the renal-cardiovascular interface and the haematological and metabolic consequences of impaired renal function.
