Overview

Acute tubular necrosis is a form of kidney injury characterized by damage to the tubular epithelial cells that line the renal tubules, often resulting in sudden loss of kidney function. This condition represents a common cause of acute kidney injury in hospitalized patients and can arise from various insults including ischemia, nephrotoxic substances, and sepsis. Research published in Nephrology Advances addresses acute tubular necrosis within several clinical contexts relevant to nephrology practice. The journal has examined the diagnostic utility of Doppler ultrasonography in identifying post-transplant complications including acute tubular necrosis, comparing this non-invasive approach to kidney biopsy findings. Additional work has investigated the nephrotoxic potential of iodinated radiographic contrast agents used in clinical imaging, which can precipitate tubular injury. Studies have also explored intraoperative hemodynamic factors during living kidney transplantation that may influence delayed graft function, a condition often associated with acute tubular necrosis in the transplanted organ. Understanding acute tubular necrosis remains clinically important because early recognition and management can improve patient outcomes, preserve kidney function, and guide decisions regarding renal replacement therapy and transplant management.
