Overview
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant neoplasm that arises from squamous epithelial cells, the flat surface cells that line the skin and many internal organs, and can develop at almost any squamous-lined site, including the mouth, throat, larynx, lungs, oesophagus, anus and skin. It typically arises from pre-existing or pre-malignant squamous changes and is among the more common epithelial cancers, with risk factors that vary by site, such as ultraviolet exposure, tobacco and human papillomavirus infection. As a category of neoplasm, SCC is studied within tumour biology and pathology in terms of diagnosis, prognosis and behaviour across different anatomical locations. Research in this journal's corpus illustrates that range, including conjunctival SCC, oral tongue and laryngeal SCC, and adenosquamous carcinoma of the stomach, as well as case series of common tumours arising in unusual locations and rare adnexal tumours such as eccrine porocarcinoma. Recurring themes include prognostic markers and scoring methods such as microvessel (Chalkley) counting and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, immunohistochemical evaluation of epithelial and pre-invasive lesions, and molecular correlates of tumour aggressiveness. Together these aspects situate SCC among epithelial Neoplasms, emphasizing histopathology, biomarkers, staging and the differentiation of SCC from related malignant and benign lesions.
