Overview

Lung cancer is a malignant disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the tissues of the lung, and it is among the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. It is broadly classified into non-small cell and small cell types, which differ in their biology, progression, and treatment. Because early-stage lung cancer often produces few symptoms, many cases are detected at an advanced stage, which makes early detection and screening important for improving outcomes. Treatment is tailored to the tumor's type and stage and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, frequently used in combination. Research published in this journal addresses a range of issues related to lung cancer and oncology more broadly. Contributions review the potential roles of agents such as statins and heparin in lung cancer, examine metastatic patterns including adrenal involvement, and consider surgical approaches such as sub-lobar resection and the influence of immunotherapy on surgical practice. Other work explores cancer biomarker development and disease-modeling platforms, the biology of tumor cells, complementary and alternative approaches to cancer prevention, and supportive care issues such as cancer-related cachexia and nutrition. Recurring themes include early detection and screening, prevention, the molecular and cellular biology of tumors, evolving treatment strategies, and the management of advanced and metastatic disease.
