Overview

Cancer treatment is the use of medical therapies to destroy, control or slow the growth and spread of cancerous cells. Because cancer comprises many different diseases, treatment is tailored to the type, location and stage of the tumour and to the individual patient. The principal modalities include surgery to remove tumours, radiation therapy to damage cancer cells with high-energy beams, and systemic drug therapies such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy that acts on specific molecular features of a cancer, and immunotherapy that harnesses the immune system. These approaches are often combined, and the goal may be cure, control of disease, or relief of symptoms through palliative care. Advances in cancer biology, diagnostics and drug design continue to expand the available options and to make treatment more precise. Research in Neoplasms and related OpenAccessPub titles spans this breadth, including long-term outcomes of well-differentiated thyroid cancer treatment, reviews of statins and heparin in lung cancer, molecular diagnosis to guide thyroid cancer management, an in-vitro assessment of the anticancer effect of alendronate in breast cancer, pH-sensitive nanomedicine for gynaecological cancers, and the management of post-mastectomy pain. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cancer treatment and the management of neoplastic disease.
