Overview

Numerical analysis is the branch of mathematics concerned with designing, analyzing, and applying algorithms that obtain approximate numerical solutions to mathematical problems that cannot be solved exactly or efficiently by analytic means. It studies how to compute quantities such as the roots of equations, solutions of linear and nonlinear systems, integrals and derivatives, and the behavior of differential equations, using finite sequences of arithmetic operations suited to computation. Central concerns are accuracy and error, including the truncation error introduced by approximating continuous processes and the round-off error arising from finite-precision arithmetic, together with the stability of an algorithm and the convergence and rate at which an approximation approaches the true answer. Core topics include interpolation and approximation of functions, numerical integration and differentiation, methods for solving systems of equations, optimization, and the numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations through discretization schemes. Because most realistic mathematical models in science and engineering lack closed-form solutions, numerical analysis provides the computational foundation for simulation, modeling, and quantitative prediction, and its methods are embedded in scientific computing, data analysis, and optimization across physical, biological, financial, and engineering applications. By combining mathematical rigor with practical algorithm design, numerical analysis enables reliable, efficient computation and the assessment of how trustworthy computed results are.
