Overview
Respiratory physiology is the branch of physiology that studies how the respiratory system carries out the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and its environment. The system includes the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and the alveoli, where gas exchange takes place across thin membranes between air and blood. Respiratory physiology examines the mechanics of breathing, including how the diaphragm and chest muscles generate the pressure changes that move air in and out of the lungs, as well as the diffusion of gases, the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, and the regulation of breathing by the nervous system in response to changing levels of these gases. It also addresses how the lungs maintain acid–base balance and how respiratory function adapts to exercise, altitude, and disease. Because efficient gas exchange is essential for supplying tissues with oxygen and removing metabolic waste, respiratory physiology is fundamental to understanding health and to diagnosing and managing conditions that impair breathing. The field connects closely to cardiovascular physiology, since the heart and lungs work together to deliver oxygen throughout the body. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research in the International Physiology Journal relevant to respiratory physiology and the function of the respiratory system.
