Overview

Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality, requiring a positive and respectful approach to sexual relationships and the possibility of safe, pleasurable experiences free of coercion, discrimination, and disease. As a field it integrates the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections including HIV, the provision of contraception and reproductive choice, the protection of sexual rights, and education that supports informed decision-making. HIV prevention now encompasses pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including screening and linkage to care within primary-care settings, alongside testing strategies such as home- and self-collected sampling that expand access to STI diagnosis. Surveillance of conditions including syphilis and other STIs informs targeted response, while knowledge, attitudes, and practices shape risk and care-seeking. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health is a major focus, particularly parent-adolescent communication and youth knowledge, as is equitable access for marginalized and stigmatized groups, including sexual-minority women and sex workers. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across these areas, including STI and HIV epidemiology, PrEP implementation, home-based testing, adolescent SRH communication and education, and access and equity in diverse populations and settings.
