Overview

Respiratory distress syndrome refers to acute conditions in which the lungs cannot provide adequate oxygenation, marked by labored, rapid breathing and impaired gas exchange. In premature infants, neonatal respiratory distress syndrome results from insufficient surfactant, the substance that keeps the lung's air sacs open. In adults, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe inflammatory injury to the lungs that can follow pneumonia, infection, or other insults, leading to fluid accumulation and dangerously low blood oxygen levels. This peer-reviewed, open-access research collection includes work relevant to respiratory distress. A published study has examined whether the alveolar–arterial oxygen pressure difference can be used to help diagnose acute respiratory distress syndrome in patients with pneumonia, addressing a practical question in the assessment of impaired gas exchange. Related research in the journal has explored respiratory complications and inflammatory responses in the context of COVID-19, where severe lung involvement can occur. Together this material reflects the journal's focus on thoracic and pulmonary medicine, offering a grounded reference on respiratory distress syndrome, its causes, and the clinical evaluation of compromised lung function.
