Overview

Respiratory disorders are a broad group of conditions that impair the structure or function of the airways, lung parenchyma, pulmonary vasculature, and the muscles and control systems that govern breathing, disrupting the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. They are major contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide and are commonly classified as obstructive, restrictive, infectious, vascular, or malignant. Obstructive disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease involve airflow limitation from inflammation, bronchoconstriction, or airway remodeling, while restrictive and interstitial diseases reduce lung expansion and compliance. Infectious respiratory diseases, including tuberculosis and pneumonia, remain a substantial global burden, particularly where access to diagnosis and treatment is limited and where drug-resistant organisms complicate control. Additional categories include allergic and hypersensitivity conditions, occupational and environmental lung disease, sleep-related breathing disorders, pulmonary vascular disease, and lung cancer. Pathophysiology often involves inflammation, oxidative stress, impaired host defense, and structural damage, and disease expression is shaped by genetic susceptibility, infection, and environmental exposures such as air pollution. Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment, pulmonary function testing, imaging, and microbiological or laboratory analysis. Management spans pharmacologic therapy, supportive and rehabilitative care, infection control, and, in advanced cases, surgical intervention. Research into respiratory disorders addresses mechanisms, diagnostics, treatment effectiveness, and the influence of environmental and public-health factors on outcomes.
