Overview

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, the vessels that carry blood from the heart through the lungs. As pressure in these arteries rises, the right side of the heart must work harder to pump blood, which over time can lead to enlargement and weakening of the right ventricle and ultimately right-sided heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension can arise from many causes and is generally classified into groups based on its underlying mechanism, including pulmonary arterial hypertension, hypertension due to left-heart disease, lung diseases and low oxygen levels, chronic blood clots in the lungs, and other or multifactorial causes. It may be associated with congenital heart defects, chronic lung disease, connective-tissue disorders, infections, and other conditions. Symptoms often include shortness of breath, fatigue, and reduced exercise tolerance, and diagnosis relies on imaging, echocardiography, and other cardiopulmonary assessments. Research relevant to this topic, within the scope of the International Journal of Thorax, includes a study of pulmonary hypertension in an elderly HIV-infected population, work on elevated tricuspid regurgitant velocity, a marker associated with pulmonary hypertension, in sickle cell anaemia, and broader studies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure that intersect with its causes. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pulmonary hypertension and related cardiopulmonary conditions.
