Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, long-term lung condition characterized by persistent airflow limitation and breathing difficulty that is not fully reversible. It commonly encompasses chronic bronchitis and emphysema and arises from chronic exposure to harmful particles or gases, including tobacco smoke and occupational or environmental pollutants. COPD is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, producing symptoms such as breathlessness, chronic cough, sputum production, and reduced exercise tolerance, often punctuated by acute exacerbations. Diagnosis rests on spirometry to confirm airflow obstruction, and management combines smoking cessation, bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and, in selected severe cases, interventional or surgical lung volume reduction. COPD frequently coexists with other chronic conditions, and its clinical heterogeneity has prompted efforts to define distinct phenotypes. Research published under this topic includes evaluation of comorbidities across COPD phenotypes, the impact of bronchiectasis on exacerbations, microalbuminuria and hypoxemia in affected patients, development of a severity classification system from health-insurance claims data, spirometric assessment in people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy, and bronchoscopic lung volume reduction using one-way valves in severe emphysema, reflecting the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic dimensions of the disease.
