Overview

Sex, in biology, is the classification of organisms as male or female based on the type of gametes they produce and the associated reproductive anatomy and physiology. In humans, biological sex is established by sex determination, the developmental process directed by the sex chromosomes and downstream genetic and hormonal pathways that govern differentiation of the gonads and reproductive tract. Sex influences physiology and health throughout life, producing sex differences in disease susceptibility, drug response, thermoregulation, and other functions, and it intersects with sexual and reproductive health, including sexually transmitted infection risk and reproductive behavior. In forensic and anthropological contexts, sex estimation from skeletal and anthropometric measurements is used for identification. Thus the term spans biological sex and its determination, sex-based variation in physiology, and the behavioral and clinical dimensions of sex. The subject matter examined in this surrounding literature includes sexual risk behaviors and pre-exposure prophylaxis among sex workers and men who have sex with men, sex differences in physiological responses such as the core interthreshold zone, estimation of sex from foot anthropometry, reproductive performance and sex ratio in animals, sexual and reproductive healthcare access, and sex-dependent genetic associations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to sex, sexual and reproductive health, and sexually transmitted infections.
