Overview

HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, is a retrovirus that infects and progressively destroys CD4-positive T lymphocytes and other immune cells, weakening cell-mediated immunity and, if untreated, advancing to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), in which opportunistic infections and malignancies arise. The virus is transmitted through sexual contact, blood and blood products, shared injection equipment, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Following entry it integrates its genome into host DNA and establishes chronic infection, monitored clinically by CD4 cell count and viral load. Although no cure exists, combination antiretroviral therapy suppresses viral replication, preserves immune function, and reduces transmission, while pre-exposure prophylaxis, testing, and behavioral interventions support prevention. The subject matter examined in this area includes two-drug antiretroviral regimens for HIV management, vaccination willingness among people living with HIV, risk-reduction interventions for adolescents, psychosocial and cognitive characteristics of people living with HIV, malaria and HIV co-infection and its effect on CD4 counts, serodiscordant-couple and mother-to-child transmission patterns, preventive knowledge and practice, and barriers to orphan care. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on HIV epidemiology, prevention, clinical management, and the social and immunological dimensions of infection.
