Overview

Spirituality refers to a person's search for meaning, purpose, and connection, often, though not always, in relation to the transcendent or sacred, and is examined in psychotherapy and health research as a dimension of human experience distinct from, yet overlapping with, religion. In clinical and psychological study, spirituality is approached as a resource that may shape coping, identity, and meaning-making, with relevance to mental health and wellbeing. Research links religious and spiritual engagement to psychological outcomes, explores spiritual intelligence in relation to behavior and commitment, and considers the role of presence, flexibility, and meaning in therapeutic approaches such as existential therapy. Spiritual care has been studied in demanding contexts, including palliative settings and the provision of spiritual health services during the COVID-19 pandemic, where attention to meaning and connection complements physical and psychological care. The topic also intersects with attitudes toward suffering and end-of-life decisions, the needs of displaced and marginalized populations, and holistic, psychosomatic perspectives on health. Significance lies in the recognition that spiritual concerns can influence how individuals understand illness, adversity, and identity, and in the integration of spiritual dimensions into person-centered psychotherapy and care, while maintaining sensitivity to diverse beliefs and the boundaries of clinical practice.
