Overview
Safety engineering is the systematic application of engineering principles and methods to identify, assess, and control hazards in order to prevent accidents, injuries, and adverse health outcomes in occupational and environmental settings. Research published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine addresses safety engineering through investigations of workplace training interventions designed to reduce injury risks and improve community health outcomes, as well as assessments of public safety risks associated with industrial infrastructure such as wind energy installations. The journal's coverage extends to both direct hazards—immediate physical risks to workers and nearby populations—and indirect health impacts that may arise from industrial operations and environmental exposures. This research matters because effective safety engineering requires evidence-based approaches to hazard identification and risk mitigation, particularly as technological systems grow more complex and their potential impacts on workers and communities expand. By examining training effectiveness and conducting systematic risk assessments across different industrial contexts, the published work contributes to the development of safer work environments and more protective public health policies, ultimately reducing preventable injuries and illnesses in both occupational and community settings.
