Overview
Air pollution is the contamination of indoor or outdoor air by chemical, physical, or biological agents that alter the natural composition of the atmosphere and can harm human health and the environment. Common pollutants include particulate matter, ground-level ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and a range of volatile organic compounds, arising from sources such as the combustion of fossil fuels, industry, transport, tobacco smoke, and waste, as well as natural sources like dust and volcanic activity. Inhalation of these pollutants is associated with effects ranging from minor irritation to serious respiratory and cardiovascular disease, and air pollution carries substantial environmental and economic consequences. In an occupational and environmental medicine context, attention focuses on the exposures people encounter in workplaces, communities, and everyday settings, and on measures to assess and reduce harm. The journal publishes research relevant to these concerns, including studies of fine and ultrafine particle pollution and smoking bans, the cardiovascular effects of involuntary smoking and vaping, particulate matter associated with specific environments, environmental and health-risk assessment of hazardous emissions and waste, sustainable urban development and solid-waste management, and the role of air quality in the spread of respiratory infection. Key aspects include exposure assessment, particulate and gaseous pollutants, second-hand smoke, and strategies for prevention and environmental health protection.
