Overview
Maternal and infant nutrition refers to the dietary needs and nutritional status of women during pregnancy and lactation and of their infants in early life. Adequate maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy supports healthy fetal growth and development, reduces the risk of complications, and helps build the nutrient stores needed for breastfeeding. For the infant, breast milk or appropriate substitutes, followed by safe and timely complementary feeding, provides the foundation for growth, immune development, and cognitive development. This period, often described as the first thousand days, is widely recognized as a critical window in which nutrition can shape lifelong health and influence the later risk of undernutrition, stunting, and chronic disease. Practices such as exclusive breastfeeding and the introduction of suitable complementary foods are central concerns. The International Journal of Nutrition, the OpenAccessPub journal hosting this page, publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research in this area, including studies of risk factors for stunted growth in young children, infant feeding knowledge and practices among lactating mothers, exclusive breastfeeding beliefs, and complementary feeding. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to maternal and infant nutrition.
