Overview

Health and nutrition denotes the relationship between dietary intake and the maintenance of health, in which the adequacy, balance, and quality of nutrients consumed shape physiological function, resistance to disease, and the risk of nutrition-related disorders. Nutrition contributes to health across the life course through the prevention of deficiency states, the support of growth and development, the regulation of metabolism and immune function, and the modulation of chronic-disease risk, while it is itself determined by food availability, socioeconomic status, education, and environmental conditions. This bidirectional link makes nutritional status both a determinant and an indicator of population health. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines the nutritional status and health outcomes of women and children, culturally tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk, the nutrition knowledge of adolescents, childhood micronutrient deficiency in relation to household economic status, the nutritional status of marginalized occupational and ethnic groups, and the determinants of dietary diversity among pregnant women. Studies employ cross-sectional surveys, intervention research, and national survey analysis across diverse populations and settings, with emphasis on socially and economically vulnerable groups. Collectively this work connects nutritional status to health and its social determinants. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in nutrition addressing the links between diet, nutritional status, and human health.
