Overview

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, encompassing the capacity of individuals and populations to function, adapt, and thrive. It is shaped by interacting determinants including genetics, nutrition, behavior, environment, socioeconomic conditions, and access to health services, and it is studied across levels from molecular and cellular function to clinical outcomes and population epidemiology. Nutrition is a central determinant, and research relevant to this area assesses the nutritional status and health outcomes of women and children, the health-promoting and food-preservative properties of plant extracts such as oregano and rosemary, and the contribution of the gut microbiota to optimal diet and health maintenance. Studies also examine bone health parameters in cell-based models, the molecular composition and potential health benefits of dietary oils, and food-safety hazards such as aflatoxin contamination in animal-derived foods. Across these strands the field addresses disease prevention, management, and the maintenance of well-being through modifiable factors including diet, physical activity, and environmental exposure. Health science thereby integrates nutrition, biomedicine, public health, and the behavioral and environmental sciences to understand and improve the conditions that sustain physical and mental well-being throughout life.
