Overview
Food hygiene and sanitation encompasses the practices and conditions necessary to maintain food safety and prevent contamination throughout production, handling, preparation, and consumption, as well as the broader environmental and infrastructural systems that support public health. Research published in the International Journal of Nutrition examines how sanitation infrastructure and hygienic practices directly influence nutritional outcomes across diverse populations. Studies have investigated the relationship between environmental sanitation, hygienic behaviors, and nutritional status among vulnerable groups including women and children in rural India and Bangladesh, revealing connections between household sanitation conditions and health indicators. The journal has published work on waterborne disease management strategies at the municipal level and explored risk factors for childhood stunting in settings with inadequate sanitation infrastructure. Additional research addresses foodborne pathogens in clinical populations, the interplay between water systems and food security, and how household economic status affects access to safe food and sanitation resources. This body of work demonstrates that food hygiene and sanitation are critical determinants of nutritional health, particularly in resource-limited settings where inadequate infrastructure and unsafe practices contribute to malnutrition, infectious disease transmission, and poor developmental outcomes in children.
