Overview

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, also known as vitamin B9, a water-soluble B vitamin essential for numerous processes in the body. Folate is required for DNA synthesis and repair, cell division, and the metabolism of amino acids, and it plays a key role in the formation of red blood cells. Adequate folic acid intake is particularly important before and during early pregnancy, when it substantially reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus, which is why supplementation and fortification are widely recommended for women of reproductive age. Folate is found naturally in foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes, and fortified products, and deficiency can lead to a form of anemia and other health problems. Research in this journal addresses folic acid and related nutritional themes, including the physicochemical characteristics of folic acid, the concept of functional foods, the role of epigenetics in nutrition, and nutrition services and awareness among pregnant women, as well as hemoglobin concentration and adverse effects in pregnancy and vitamin deficiencies in vulnerable groups. Within the field of nutrition, folic acid is studied for its roles in pregnancy, blood formation, and disease prevention. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to folic acid, micronutrients, and maternal and nutritional health.
