Overview
Energy intake is the total amount of energy a person obtains from the food and beverages they consume, supplied chiefly by the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the diet and typically measured in kilocalories or kilojoules. It is a central concept in nutrition because the balance between energy intake and the energy the body expends through metabolism and physical activity determines changes in body weight and energy stores. Persistently consuming more energy than is expended leads to weight gain and is a key contributor to overweight and obesity, while inadequate energy intake can impair physical performance, growth, and health. Optimal energy intake supports a healthy body weight, metabolic function, and overall wellbeing, and assessing it accurately is fundamental to dietary evaluation and intervention. Research in nutrition that examines energy intake includes studies of how low energy intake affects glucose regulation and stamina, analyses of energy intake gaps and nutritional status in specific populations, investigation of food intake patterns and energy density in relation to weight management, and the evaluation of methods for measuring energy intake and expenditure. Such work reflects how energy intake is quantified and linked to health outcomes. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to energy intake within the nutrition literature.
