Overview
Diet and nutrition is the study of how food intake supplies the nutrients required for growth, function, and health, and of how dietary patterns influence the risk and management of disease. It integrates the assessment of what people eat with an understanding of nutrient requirements, nutritional status, and the physiological effects of diet on cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune health. The field spans population nutrition, clinical and therapeutic feeding, and the influence of social, economic, and cultural factors on dietary choices and adequacy. Research in this area examines dietary assessment methods, the nutritional status and related knowledge of adolescent girls and reproductive-age women, and the diet and nutritional status of older adults. Studies also consider chronic-disease risk among vegetarian populations, dietary diversity in pregnancy, and the use of peptide-based and energy-dense nutritional formulas in paediatric and cancer care. Further work addresses high-fat dietary approaches, gastrointestinal health, and the relationship between nutrition and conditions such as schizophrenia. By linking dietary intake and nutritional status to health outcomes across the life course and in clinical contexts, diet-and-nutrition research informs dietary guidance, nutritional support, and interventions aimed at preventing deficiency, managing chronic disease, and improving well-being in diverse and vulnerable populations.
