Overview
Diet, food, and nutrition refer to the foods and beverages a person habitually consumes, the substances those foods contain, and the way the body uses nutrients to support growth, energy, and health. Diet describes the overall pattern of eating; food is the material consumed; and nutrition is the process and science of how nutrients are obtained and used, together shaping risk for disease and the maintenance of well-being across the life course. Adequate and balanced intake is central to preventing undernutrition and deficiency as well as diet-related chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Research published in the International Journal of Nutrition has examined many facets of this field, including the nutritional status of women of reproductive age, dietary diversity among adolescent pregnant women and among people with diabetes and hypertension, and risk factors for stunted growth in children. Further work has addressed nutrition education and diet quality in schoolchildren, culturally tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk, the role of the gut microbiota in diet and health, functional foods, epigenetics and nutrition, and the cultural dimensions of the Mediterranean diet. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to diet, food, and nutrition and their links to health and disease.
