Overview
Diabetes nutrition is the branch of clinical and applied nutrition concerned with the use of diet to prevent diabetes mellitus and to optimise glycaemic control, insulin sensitivity, and long-term outcomes in people living with the condition. Its core principles address the quantity, type, and timing of carbohydrate intake, the glycaemic index and glycaemic load of foods, adequate dietary fibre from whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit, and the quality of dietary fat and protein. Medical nutrition therapy seeks to moderate postprandial glucose excursions, support healthy body weight, improve lipid profiles and blood pressure, and reduce the risk of micro- and macrovascular complications. Particular attention is given to substituting refined carbohydrates, evaluating non-caloric and natural sweeteners as sugar replacements, and individualising plans to cultural food practices and comorbidities. Emerging areas include the influence of the gut microbiota and the prospect of nutrient- and microRNA-based dietary modulation of metabolic regulation. Research relevant to this topic encompasses non-caloric sweeteners in type 2 diabetes, plant-based agents for diabetes control, culturally tailored dietary interventions for cardiometabolic risk, dietary diversity in diabetic patients, and the effects of energy intake on glucose regulation. The International Journal of Nutrition publishes peer-reviewed work on dietary strategies for the prevention and management of diabetes.
