Overview

Calcium is an essential mineral and the most abundant in the human body, vital for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth and for fundamental physiological processes including muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood clotting, and the regulation of cell signalling. The vast majority of the body's calcium is stored in the skeleton, which also acts as a reserve to keep blood calcium within a narrow range. Adequate dietary calcium, alongside vitamin D, is important for achieving and preserving bone mass, and insufficient intake over time is associated with reduced bone density and osteoporosis. Research published in this journal addresses calcium in nutrition and health, including a cross-sectional study of the influence of education sources on osteoporosis knowledge and calcium intake in adult women, and analyses of the mineral content of various foods such as mushrooms, faba bean and sorghum blends, and indigenous spices that contribute calcium and other micronutrients to the diet. Further work examines calcium signalling in laboratory models and vitamin D effects on bone-cell parameters, reflecting calcium's broad biological roles. These studies illustrate both the dietary sources of calcium and its importance for bone health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to calcium and its role in nutrition and health.
