Overview
Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating, in which a person consumes a large amount of food while feeling a loss of control, followed by compensatory behaviors intended to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise. Self-evaluation in the disorder is unduly influenced by body shape and weight, and the condition typically occurs in people who maintain a body weight within or above the normal range, which can make it less visible than other eating disorders. Bulimia nervosa is associated with significant medical complications, including electrolyte imbalances, dental and gastrointestinal damage, and cardiovascular risk, as well as with anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric conditions. Treatment commonly combines psychological therapies, nutritional support, and, in some cases, medication. Research within the International Journal of Nutrition relevant to this topic includes a study using actigraphy to assess sleep and psychopathology in patients with night eating syndrome, with and without binge-eating behaviors, which examines disordered eating patterns related to the binge-eating spectrum. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to bulimia nervosa, binge eating, and the nutritional and psychological dimensions of eating disorders.
