Overview

Beverages are liquids prepared for drinking, ranging from water and milk to tea, coffee, fruit juices, plant-based milks, fermented drinks, and sweetened and functional beverages, and they constitute a significant and modifiable component of dietary intake. In nutrition science, beverages are studied for their contribution to hydration, energy intake, and the delivery of nutrients and bioactive compounds, as well as for their effects on metabolic and chronic-disease risk. A prominent research theme is the role of sugar-sweetened beverages in energy balance, weight, and dental and metabolic health, together with the evaluation of non-caloric sweeteners, such as monk fruit, as alternatives in populations including people with type 2 diabetes, and the policy implications of measures like sugar-sweetened beverage taxation. Other work addresses the antioxidant and phytochemical content of fruit- and plant-derived drinks, fermented and brewed beverages, and the place of beverages within dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet and dietary-diversity assessments. The composition, processing, and consumption patterns of beverages thus link them to disease prevention, weight management, and public-health nutrition. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the nutritional composition and health effects of beverages and their role within dietary patterns and metabolic health.
