Overview

Agricultural science is the body of knowledge and applied research concerned with the production of food, feed, fibre, and other products from crops and livestock, and with the management of the natural resources on which production depends. It is an inherently interdisciplinary field, drawing on biology, chemistry, genetics, ecology, soil science, engineering, and economics to understand and improve agricultural systems. Core areas include soil management and fertility, crop science and plant breeding, plant protection, animal husbandry and nutrition, water and land use, and the development of sustainable and resilient farming techniques. Agricultural science investigates how genetic, environmental, and management factors influence yield, quality, and stability of production, and how practices can be adapted to changing climatic, economic, and social conditions. It is closely linked to human nutrition and public health, since the composition, safety, and availability of food are shaped by what is grown and how, and to environmental stewardship, since farming affects soil health, biodiversity, water quality, and greenhouse-gas emissions. Contemporary research emphasises sustainable intensification, efficient use of inputs, reduction of post-harvest losses, and the integration of new technologies and data-driven methods. By generating evidence to guide policy and practice, agricultural science aims to secure adequate, nutritious, and safe food supplies while conserving the resources needed for long-term productivity.
